[News Update] Calaway Slowly Healing; Baby Doll's Hospital Visit; More Details
Baby Doll, who was also held hostage with Calaway by the Sheik, visited Calaway in the hospital today. She had reportedly been the only person to come and visit him since he was shot. Calaway told LegendsChampionshipWrestling.com that he would make a statement on LCW Showdown this week. Showdown this week takes place at the Manchester Evening News Arena in Manchester, England and Calaway is expected to make his statement live via satellite as doctors say Calaway will not be released until after LCW Showdown next week.
Calaway was rushed to the hospital only moments after LCW Showdown went off the air last Wednesday. Calaway, along with Baby Doll, was taken hostage, at gunpoint, by The Iron Sheik. Sheik, who was disgruntled after losing his job in a loser leaves LCW match to Jake "The Snake" Roberts at last Sunday's LCW Night of Horrors pay-per-view, apparently blamed Calaway for the loss and told police after the incident that he had felt persecuted by the Chairman for months which forced the Iranian to focus his rage and anger on Calaway.
Sheik took Calaway and Baby Doll hostage at the beginning of last Wednesday's episode of LCW Showdown, and despite efforts from Sheik Adnan Al-Kassie, the Iron Sheik's manager, Nikolai Volkoff, the Iron Sheik's former tag team partner, and others, it was LCW Commissioner Nick Bockwinkel's urging of the Sheik to release the cameraman who was also being held captive, that sparked the events that would lead to Calaway being shot. The cameraman tripped exiting the office which distracted Sheik and gave Baby Doll an opening to attempt to wrestle the gun away from Shiek. However, the gun accidentally went off twice and shot Calaway once in the shoulder and once in the chest.
The doctors who operated on Calaway only minutes after he arrived at the hospital said that the bullet in his shoulder was successfully removed, but the bullet that went into his chest was too close to his heart to remove immediately. They worked to remove the bullet in his chest first as it was initially considered the most life threatening, but were unsuccessful and quickly moved to remove the bullet from his shoulder. They managed to stop the bleeding around the chest wound, removed the bullet from Calaway's shoulder and then attempted a second surgery yesterday afternoon which also met with failure to remove the bullet, which was "dangerously close" to his heart. Doctors worry that any further attempts to remove the bullet could irrevocably damage Calaway's heart or cost Calaway his life.
During the second operation to remove the bullet near his heart, Calaway actually died twice while on the operating table doctors revealed yesterday in a press conference. At that point, doctors decided to leave the bullet where it was and hope for the best because any further attempts to remove the bullet could have killed the Chairman of the Board..
Calaway met with Oakland City Attorney John Russo in the hospital today and Calaway requested that charges not be pressed against The Iron Sheik, but Calaway did ask Russo to make sure that the judge granted a restraining order against Sheik stand for a distance of 500 feet. Calaway also told LegendsChampionshipWrestling.com that the Iron Sheik's firing would stand and he would not be welcomed back to Legends Championship Wrestling until his personal issues were settled.
Doctors reiterated in a press conference that the bullet in Calaway's chest near his heart will have to stay there because further surgery could be a risk to Calaway's life. They also warned that Calaway should avoid serious physical contact because any intense, sudden movement could dislodge the bullet and cause further damage, even to Calaway's heart near which the bullet is currently resting.
